The plummage is impeccable…

I wonder whoever came up with the idea of plucking feathers off a poor bird – and then sticking them on the head! Was it inspiration and awe of nature? or cruel mockery? Perhaps it was in an attempt to take flight? Well, regardless, there can be no doubt that the last couple of years have seen  booms in the plumes.  Plummage that is.  Petal Products is not an exception.  Not OVERLY plume-crazy, I’ve been hesitant (er.. or too busy) to dip my toe in the feathery waters.  Well, not so, thanks to a recent clients’ commission. Having worked with me before, she knew that I would be up to the radical task of replicating a digital design and bringing it to reality.   Now I know how Dr Frankenstien felt. Benuded birds, aside….

The Original Design I was commissioned to replicate.

Fairly easy, I can’t complain. Relatively simple.

The thing that intrigued me was the hovering pearl puzzle.  I wanted to be faithful to the idea, so I thought: let’s do it! Another complication, logistics aside, was the sheer size of the principle stone: at least 1.5 inches — and probably 2! Unless we’re talking about…no… EVEN if we’re talking about a real gem, the potential for gaudy Vegas-style Barbie bijoux was frightening, indeed. So I suggested a compromise:

Duly called “Creative Licence”, and I don’t regret it. I thought the variety of color and texture and the play on circles added an element that wasn’t necessary in the digital file, but enriched the design in real life.

As  for the floating pearls, we had a few choices:

Pearly-Guys

Mini-Guys

Or even Gemmy-Guys.

Well, being abundantly magnanimous, I allowed my client to decide. 🙂

Pearls, it is!

Strung on translucent beading line – four strands for a sure fit!

and VOILA!

a good look at the center piece!

Now. To see the piece in it’s entirety? So glad you asked…..

Here’s a few of the gems:

Uh, so… I have two messages in my “spam” box …. but they seem to be comments… So confused.  So, uh, if you actually wrote me and want an answer…. maybe write it again and say “Yo, I’m not a spammer…” then I’d love to chat it up.   If it’s just spam… well, I guess it’s just spam.  No hurt feelings. 🙂
